The vermillion-red line of FORÊ is the first one I drew. It is also the line most people outside China recognize. Red on yellow paper is the visual signature of Lunar New Year, of weddings, of every celebratory envelope. The reason the color is red is not aesthetic. The reason is that cinnabar — the mineral pigment ground into ink for centuries — was believed to ward off snakes, scorpions, and bad luck. The reason it stuck is that it looks like the inside of a heart that is still beating.
The 12 fixed seals (the library)
The 12 fixed vermillion seals are the ones I have not varied. Each one corresponds to a single Chinese character with a thousand-year folk usage, and each one I have drawn at least four times until I could draw it without thinking. They are:
- 喜 (Xǐ) — Joy. The double-character 囍 is the wedding seal. Used on every red envelope at a Chinese wedding since at least the Song dynasty.
- 合 (Hé) — Union. The two mouths, the two grains, the two people. The seal you write on the bedroom door on the wedding night.
- 緣 (Yuán) — Fate / affinity. The Buddhist term for the conditions that bring two people together. Not destiny, but the quality of attention you pay to the meeting.
- 恩 (Ēn) — Grace / kindness given. The seal for the love that is not romantic — for parents, for old friends, for the dog. Often the most necessary one.
- 情 (Qíng) — Feeling. The character is heart on the left, qing-blue on the right. The seal for the part of love that is not a decision.
- 相 (Xiāng) — Mutual. The character is two trees sharing one root. The seal for the love that is reciprocal, not one-directional.
- 守 (Shǒu) — To keep. To guard. To stay. The seal for the long middle part of love, after the excitement, when the work is the point.
- 信 (Xìn) — Trust. The character is person on the left, word on the right. The seal for the love that survives an honest conversation.
- 容 (Róng) — To hold, to contain, to forgive. The seal for the love that is large enough to include the bad days.
- 久 (Jiǔ) — Long time. The character is a folded cloth, persisting. The seal for the love that outlasts the version of you that began it.
- 心 (Xīn) — Heart. The seal you write when you do not know which of the others is right.
- 緣定 (Yuán Dìng) — Fated affinity. The two-character variant of 緣, used when the meeting was not an accident.
The 13 blind-pool seals (the practice)
The 13 blind-pool vermillion seals are the ones I drew later, after the fixed library, for the situations the old 12 do not cover. They include seals for the morning after a fight, for the third date, for the fifteenth year, for the love that did not work out, for the love that is ending, for the love that is just beginning, for the love you have for yourself on a hard morning. They are not on the website as a list. You only meet them by pulling the red blind box. That is the point.
How to use a vermillion love seal in 2026
- Decide what you are working on. Not the outcome. The working-on. I am working on being less afraid of being known. Or: I am working on forgiving my mother. Or: I am working on letting someone love me.
- Pull a vermillion seal. From the 12 fixed if you already know the word. From the blind pool if you do not.
- Set it as your phone wallpaper for seven days. Lock screen, home screen, both. Let it interrupt you 70 times a day.
- Do not show it to the person you are thinking of. The seal is for you, not for the conversation.
- On day eight, decide. Keep the seal, replace it with another vermillion, or step out of the red line for a while and pull a gold or amethyst. The decision is the practice.
What a vermillion love seal is not
It is not a spell. It will not make anyone love you. It will not save a failing relationship. It will not bring back an ex. It is a sentence in red ink that you look at seventy times a day for a week, and the sentence is the one you needed to remember. That is the whole thing. The drawing is a thousand years old. The work is yours.
