Gold is the second color I drew. The choice was not aesthetic. In the Hunan folk tradition, gold-yellow paper is reserved for blessings related to the material world: money, work, harvest, household stability. Red is for love and celebration. Yellow is for the things you have to keep doing for a long time to see the result. The two colors do not mix. The seal you write on a Lunar New Year red envelope is different from the seal you write on the back of your shop's door.
The 12 fixed gold seals
These are the 12 characters I have not varied since I started drawing FORÊ. They are not a complete list of money-related Chinese characters. They are the 12 I believe work in 2026, for the reasons a person might pick one up.
- 財 (Cái) — Wealth. The character is shell on the left (ancient currency), 才 on the right (talent). The seal for the money you earn by what you are good at, not by what you own.
- 祿 (Lù) — Emolument. The character is 礻 (spirit) on the left, 鹿 (deer) on the right. The seal for the salary, the steady income, the long employment. Not the windfall.
- 豐 (Fēng) — Abundance. The character is three pieces of grain stacked. The seal for the harvest that arrives because you planted in three different seasons.
- 裕 (Yù) — Plenty, with room to spare. The seal for the cushion. The savings account. The four weeks of expenses that means you can say no to a bad job.
- 進 (Jìn) — To advance. The seal for the project, the promotion, the next step. The one I draw on the inside cover of my planner every January.
- 勤 (Qín) — Diligence. The character is 力 (strength) pulling 堇 (a kind of plant). The seal for the unglamorous middle of any long project.
- 實 (Shí) — Solid, real, actual. The seal for the difference between talking about money and having it. The character is 宀 (roof) over 田 (field) over 貝 (shell).
- 信 (Xìn) — Trust. Same character as the love line, but here it means the trust you build with a customer, a client, a long-time employer. The seal for the reputation that compounds.
- 和 (Hé) — Harmony. The character is grain (禾) and mouth (口). The seal for the negotiation where both sides leave with something. Money without 和 does not last.
- 安 (Ān) — Peace. The character is woman (女) under roof (宀). The seal for the household that is stable enough to take a risk. The prerequisite for any good financial decision.
- 足 (Zú) — Enough. The character is foot on the bottom, mouth on top. The seal for the realization that what you have is sufficient. The hardest one to draw because the line between enough and complacent is invisible.
- 久 (Jiǔ) — Long time. Same character as the love line. Here it means the money that outlasts the trend. The slow compounding. The boring portfolio that wins over thirty years.
Why gold is not a get-rich-quick seal
I have been asked to add a seal that says 暴富 (sudden wealth). I have refused. The reason is not moral. The reason is that the people who pull a 暴富 seal on a Friday night are the same people who are exhausted by Monday morning. A talisman that promises the windfall reinforces the belief that the slow road is wrong. The slow road is the only road. The gold seals are for the slow road. If you want a windfall, go to a casino. If you want a 30-year plan, pull a gold seal.
How to use a gold seal without becoming someone you are not
- Pick the seal that names the part of money you are actually working on. Not the part you wish you were working on.
- Write the corresponding character by hand on a piece of paper, once a day for 30 days. The drawing is not magic. The drawing makes the intention physical.
- Pair the seal with a money action. 勤 needs a workday. 裕 needs a savings transfer. 信 needs a difficult honest conversation with a client. The seal is the reminder. The action is the work.
- Pull a new gold seal every quarter. Same as the red line — the practice is the rotation, not the possession.
What a gold seal is not
It is not a substitute for a budget. It is not going to double your income. It is not going to fix a business that is fundamentally broken. It is a sentence in gold ink that you write down every day for a month, and the sentence is the one that makes the slow road worth walking. The drawing is a thousand years old. The work is yours.
